"Drive Your Corvette to Work Day"
Celebrate the Enjoyment of America's Sports Car
Friday, June 27th is the 8th Annual Drive Your Corvette To Work Day, sponsored by Mid America Motorworks. In honor of Drive Your Corvette To Work Day, enthusiasts across America will make "America's Sports Car" their commuter car for the day.
Mid America Motorworks promotes Drive Your Corvette To Work Day among Corvette owners and clubs. The goal is to have as many Corvette owners as possible drive their car to work that day. Launched in 2001, Mid America Motorworks' Drive Your Corvette To Work Day is an annual event celebrated by thousands of Corvette owners. This year's event is especially noteworthy as 2008 is GM's 100th anniversary. The Chevrolet Corvette is arguably GM's greatest contribution to the automotive world.
Corvette owners who observe "Drive Your Corvette To Work Day" are encouraged to send photos or high resolution digital pictures of their car at work to
clubs@mamotorworks.com or P.O. Box 1368, Effingham, IL 62401. Mid America Motorworks will post as many pictures as possible on their website,
www.mamotorworks.com/corvette. Visit our site to see past DYCTWD events. |

Sioux Falls Corvette Club Board Meeting
June 5, 2008
Board Members Present: MJ Klokkenga, Barb Koopman, Mike Skiles, Arnie and Shirley VanVoorst, Jason Ahrendt, Ryan and Denise Berg, Cheryl and Randy Nielsen, Mick and Glen Hoffer, Bruce Rogers, Pat Campbell and Sharon Arshem
Guests: Arnie Koopman, Mike Gilbride, Kathy Klokkenga and Ron Kersbergen.
President MJ Klokkenga opened the meeting at 7:30 PM.
Secretary’s Report – Motion made by Mike S., seconded by Shirley VanVoorst to waive the reading of last month’s minutes. Motion carried; minutes are on file with the secretary.
Treasurer’s Report – Barb Koopman gave the treasurer’s report. She checked into the renewal of one of our CDs and made the recommendation that we renew for 13 months at 3.41 APY. Motion was made by Mick, seconded by Ryan to accept Barb’s recommendation. Motion carried. Further motion was made by Jason, seconded by Bruce, to accept the treasurer’s report. Motion carried. A copy of the report is on file with the treasurer.
Membership – Mike Skiles reported that we have 199 members.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Plastic Chips – Pat Campbell reported the next deadline will be June 16.
Autocross – Jason reported that everyone had a good time at the first autocross. Twenty-eight people (14 cars) attended the Hutchinson, MN event. They had a great Funkana and the whole weekend was very well run. The SFCC trailer has been fixed under warranty with a $37 charge for labor. The radios in the trailer used for the autocrosses have not worked well for the past couple of events. Six new hand held radios, with good range, have been purchased at a cost of $17 each. The BHCC insurance certificate has been ordered and received and will raise the coverage. Racing at Thunder Valley will be June 7. Jason received approval to use the Worthington Airport for a June 28 autocross.
Historian – No report. Mike Skiles will buy an adapter for the camera to be able to show pictures taken at events on a large screen (donated by Mike Gilbride and stored at Bakker Crossing).
Buzz Book – Mike Gilbride reported that 52 of the ‘08 books were handed out at the last general meeting.
BHCC – 228 have registered for the BHCC. All is going well. Riddles will be donating two items for the Classic, one item valued at $2500, one at $1800.
Webmaster – Type up anything you want printed exactly as you want it to appear before sending it to Colleen.
OLD BUSINESS
Credit Card Machine – Barb reported that a credit card machine can be set up for a one time charge of $45 with no monthly fee and no minimum. Twenty cents will be charged the club for each transaction plus 3.32% for each credit card purchase. The machine can be drop shipped overnight to MJ. Since there is no monthly charge, it was decided to keep the machine through the November banquet for those wishing to pay membership dues with a credit card.. A motion was made by Denise and seconded by Cheryl to accept the terms of the machine and go ahead and order it. Motion carried.
Insurance for Trailers and Merchandise – This has been taken care of and Barb has paid the bill.
Insurance for Club Board Members – No report at this time pending information Jason has requested.
NEW BUSINESS
Mike Skiles will pick a ‘work day’ to get the trailers cleaned up, tires checked etc. before the Classic. Information will be in the Chips or sent via email soliciting help.
It has been brought to Mike Skiles attention that a possible point of interest at one of the meetings may be some basic CPR training. Patti Campbell does this at the hospital and Pat C. said he would ask her if she could bring some mannequins and instructors to a meeting.
After Bruce Rogers bought some things from Mid America for the Car Show, he received a letter from them asking for a roster of our membership. He will write a letter to them thanking them for the merchandise he received, but explain to them that it is against our club policy to give out that information.
Ron Kersbergen brought up his concern that we should buy a new generator since the current one hasn’t been working for the past 2 years. Bruce Rogers will look into pricing and bring back information to the next board meeting.
The next (and last) BHCC meeting will be June 14 at 9:30 AM at Skelly’s.
The next general membership meeting will be Wednesday, June 25 at 7:30 PM at Bakker’s Crossing.
The next board meeting will be July 9 prior to the packet stuffing at 5:30 PM at the EAA Bldg. at the Tea Airport. NOTE DATE, TIME AND PLACE CHANGE.
Reminder – All club members are encouraged and welcome to attend any board meeting. Remember to check the SFCC website for further information on events.
There being no further business a motion was made by Cheryl, seconded by Shirley, to adjourn. Motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Sharon Arshem,
Secretary

From
the President
The Hutchinson Corvette Club asked our club to help run the Funkana at their rally this year. The rally was "Corvettes For A Cure". Cathy and I volunteered to go and help our club. It was a great time. I want to thank Dave Burns for taking the auto cross trailer up and Jason Ahrendt for setting up the computer for the event. Mike Skiles did a great job setting up the course. Watching the guys putting on a bra and doing the hula-hoop was a hoot. I also want to thank the members that helped out and or went up to the rally. There were twenty eight of us.
The club had its own Funkana on June 8th. It was the trial run before the Classic. John and Danita Pesicka did a great job laying out the course and running the event. Too bad the gold nuggets weren't real.
After the Funkana we had our first "Drive and Dine" event. We had over fifty members drive through the Falls and around the outskirts of Sioux Falls. We drove about forty miles. We dined at the Lone Star Steak House and had a great social time.
We want to thanks Bruce and Marlene Lemon, Dalliss and Marion Englund for doing the work for this great event.
We have a lot of new members, so to see who they are, pick up the new Buzz Book at the next membership meeting. Mike Gilbride has done an excellent job on it for our club.
You have the car of choice. You joined the Sioux Falls Corvette Club. Once you join a club, jump in with both feet. There's more to the experience than just attending meetings.
Consider volunteering to work an event and try to be at all social events, or join the board. The whole point of having a Corvette is to drive it, but there are times to enjoy it with friends.
See you at the next membership meeting.
From your prez,
M.J. Klokkenga
President

Hutchinson Corvette show was second to none
Did you happen to see the Corvettes in Hutchinson last weekend?
We stopped counting at 100, which is not bad for a first-time effort. On Saturday, 'vettes cruised around town, checking out the restaurants while testing their skills at dart throwing! The fairgrounds were the focus for the six generations of Corvettes produced from 1953 through 2008.

All of the activity and the added population was the result of meticulous long-range planning, and attention to details by the organizers of the event, Ron and Linda Cleland.
Under the direction of Ron and Linda and their families, the Crow River Corvette Club and the Sioux Falls Corvette Club worked together to put on the event. Competitions for the participants ranged from a Funkana Corvette event, the Blind Faith Auto Cross, the Dart Cruise and a caravan through town after the Corvette Show at the fairgrounds.

The Saturday evening banquet, where the menu included "personal" entree orders, was emceed by Ron and Linda, who made sure each entree order was correct. They never missed a beat the whole weekend. The Corvettes for a Cure event had a special meaning to Ron and Linda, since Linda is a breast cancer survivor. We have attended many Corvette events, and the Hutchinson Corvette show is ranked second to none.

Ron and Linda deserve so much credit for a well-organized, friendly, fun and successful event. The city of Hutchinson hosted a huge event and the city gained a whole bunch of public recognition because Ron and Linda had a dream, and they made it come true the old-fashioned way - they worked hard.
We thank them for a great weekend of fun. The city of Hutchinson owes them one.
This Letter to the Editor was in the Hutchinson, MN newspaper on June 5, 2008. Thanks to Mike & Colleen Skiles for sharing this with us.
